In short
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (1934–2021) was a Hungarian-American psychologist and a founder of positive psychology. His studies of artists and athletes in the 1970s identified the autotelic state he named flow: full absorption in an activity where challenge and skill are matched and attention stops drifting.
1. The framework
Flow research's lasting contribution is the channel model: engagement peaks when difficulty tracks ability. Boredom and anxiety are the two flanking failure modes, and both are diagnosable — which turned a poetic state into an adjustable condition of work.
Everything in the library's flow cluster operationalizes this: audit what breaks absorption, then protect the conditions that restore it.
2. Where critics push back
Flow is a state, not a trait, and self-reported flow is vulnerable to memory's smoothing. The research supports its mechanisms — clear goals, immediate feedback, matched challenge — more firmly than any single measure of it.
