Best for
This check is for people whose focus problem has a shape they cannot see:
- Your days end exhausted and thin — lots of activity, few artifacts — and you cannot say exactly why
- You have blamed your phone, your willpower, and your colleagues, in that order, and the problem survived all three
- You are about to redesign your workday and want to know which blocker to spend the redesign on
- You have taken the flow profile test and landed somewhere flat, and want the diagnosis behind it
Not for clinical attention concerns — a lifelong, cross-context pattern of attention difficulty is a clinician's question. And not as a team diagnostic: your blockers are yours; the team version of this analysis is the team flow audit, which measures the shared structure.
What it measures
The check treats flow's preconditions as engineerable: Csikszentmihalyi's conditions tell you what attention needs, and the blocker families tell you which requirement is currently unmet. Four families cover most diagnosable cases:
Interruption Control
The blocker everyone names first, and the one with the most research behind it: an interruption costs far more than its duration, because the work does not resume where it stopped. Items measure how protected your attention actually is — not how annoyed you are by it.
Goal Clarity
Flow requires knowing, this hour, what done looks like. Ambiguous goals produce the signature fog-state: busy all day, nothing finished, a vague sense of shuffling. Items ask how often your work has a next concrete step versus a general direction.
Environment Fit
The physical and digital environment: noise, the open-plan gamble, the fourteen tabs, the chat window that is technically closable and practically never closed. Items probe whether your working environment cooperates with attention or quietly taxes it all day.
Load Balance
The overload blocker: too many open loops, each holding a slice of working memory, until the current task runs on the remainder. This is not stress in the dramatic sense — it is the arithmetic of attention divided by commitments.

How it works
- Ten items, each rated 1 to 5, two or three per blocker family.
- Items are written for this check in blocker-diagnosis language — each one points at a specific, nameable condition rather than a mood.
- Scores invert the blocker framing: high means the requirement is met, low means the blocker dominates. The radar shows the health of each requirement.
- The report identifies your primary blocker — the one furthest from flow's requirements — and prescribes the standard fix for it, sized for a week.

What it cannot tell you
Blocker diagnosis is plumbing, not poetry: most focus problems have a location and a name, and almost none of them are character flaws.
What the check cannot do:
- It diagnoses your environment and habits, not your capacity. Someone with a genuinely trained three-hour attention span scores badly in an interruption-heavy office, and correctly so.
- Self-report on interruptions is biased in both directions: some under-count their self-interruptions, others romanticize how interrupted they are.
- Blockers interact: overload makes you seek interruption, and interruption manufactures overload. The check names your primary blocker; the interaction is in the report text, not the score.
- The four-family model is a diagnostic simplification. Chronic sleep debt, medications, and mood all masquerade as blockers, and the check cannot see them.
- A bad week produces a bad reading. Take it twice, two weeks apart, before concluding anything structural.

After an interruption, people return to the original task — but the task returns damaged: slower, more error-prone, and sometimes never resumed at all.
